<p>Turning 40 can be a powerful and transient event even though many women believe that everything starts to change or even fall apart at 40. This doesn&#8217;t have to be so! Women can stay strong and competitive, healthy and fit well over the age of 40. There may be some changes you need to make, but it is an important time for you to make these changes so that you can continue to stay in shape.</p>
<p>Some basic dietary changes can help you to supplement your workouts and keep you strong. Calcium, for example, has always been important in a woman&#8217;s diet, but it is critical to start supplementing calcium now if you haven&#8217;t already. Bone density begins to decline and if this gets really bad, it can lead to osteoporosis later in life. Ginseng is an herb that can help to give you energy when you start to feel fatigue, and some people swear it is what helps keep them young. Consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables is crucial to keeping yourself young. Not only is it very healthy for your body, it is quite beneficial for your skin as well. Natural foods, especially fruits and vegetables, are full of antioxidants, and these help keep free radicals from destroying that youthful appearance of your skin. Also good are salmon and other foods such as almonds, flax and fatty fish which provide a strong source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Again, this is good for your heart health but also for your radiant skin.</p>
<p>Staying in shape also means getting &#8211; or staying &#8211; physical, of course. You may discover aches and pains that you haven&#8217;t noticed prior to turning 40. It&#8217;s not because 40 is some magical age, but rather a useful timeline to gauge when women tend to start feeling less energetic, more rigid, or have tighter muscles than they used to. A fun and relaxing antidote to this is yoga. Yoga has been said to be the true fountain of youth! A good, long yoga session a few times a week or a simple practice of ten to twenty minutes daily can relax, tone and lengthen your muscles as well as your spirit. It also helps to de-stress your mind, which has been shown to have an effect on cortisol levels in the body. By reducing cortisol, you can help reduce the belly fat that may be more stubborn to remove these days. Any time of stress-relieving mechanism you use will help keep you young, but yoga is an especially good one.</p>
<p>If yoga isn&#8217;t really your speed, pick something that is. Maybe you enjoy spinning, or a step class or kickboxing. Whatever it is, don&#8217;t stop now just because you&#8217;ve reached that dreaded age. Keeping active now is just as important as it was when you were twenty, if not more so. If your aches and pains feel like they are preventing you from doing what you like to do best, it probably means you need to stretch more. Stretching can be a wonderful tool to keep you young and keep your muscles supple and strong. It can help prevent muscle tears and help you reach new levels of fitness by warming up the muscles and ligaments, but it can also just feel great after a nice, long bout of exercise. If you run or bike, be sure to stretch the calves and quadriceps muscles as well as the hamstrings. If you like to partake in a class at your gym and there is a lot of jumping involved, make sure to stretch the ankles as well. Simply adding ten or fifteen minutes of stretching to your daily routine can make you feel years younger if you are faithful about it.</p>
<p>Staying in shape doesn&#8217;t just mean looking good or staying in good shape on the outside. Once you reach the age of forty, keeping up with regular doctor appointments becomes more important than it was in days past. Make sure to get a mammogram and screen for early detection of breast cancer. Make an appointment with your general practitioner for a complete physical. Consult with a dermatologist, and keep regular full-body skin checkups once or twice a year, which can help screen out skin cancer and suspicious moles that may crop up. If you used to see the eye doctor once every couple of years, cut that in half and see him once annually. Unfortunately, the eyes are quick to deteriorate as you age, and you will want to keep up with these check-ups for safety reasons, to be able to keep reading, and to check for signs of glaucoma and other age-related diseases.</p>
<p>Nobody said getting older was fun, but it does not have to be painful. The age-old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure applies to the aging process very well, and if you take these measures you too can age gracefully.</p>

<p>Do Fats Fit Into A Healthy Dinner Recipe?</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re like me you are often looking for a quick and healthy dinner recipe, but you are concerned about the amount of fat in some choices. However, fats are essential to the proper functioning of our bodies. Among other things, fats help maintain cell membrane integrity and they help nerve transmission and nutrient absorption. </p>
<p>However, if consumed in excess quantities, fats can lead to weight gain, heart disease and various types of cancer. Be aware that not all fats are alike. Some fats contribute to our well-being and some can be quite harmful, increasing the risk of developing heart disease. </p>
<p>So your (quick) healthy dinner recipe should contain a certain amount of fat. But how much fat do we need exactly? The Zone, a popular diet, suggests that the calories we consume should come from carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the following proportion: 40%, 30% and 30%, respectively. We don&#8217;t necessarily have to drastically follow this advice; it should only serve as a general reference. The key is to replace the bad fats in our meals with good ones. </p>
<p>Here is a quick review of the different types of fat.</p>
<p>* Saturated Fats</p>
<p>Saturated fats cause an increase of blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, which are the bad cholesterol. Products that have high saturated fat content include meat, eggs, dairy products and seafood. A few plant foods, like coconut oil, palm kernel oil and palm oil also contain high amounts of saturated fats. </p>
<p>* Trans Fats</p>
<p>Trans fatty acids are the result of the industrial process of &#8220;hydrogenating&#8221; liquid oils. This process was devised in an attempt to make food products last longer. Trans fats are commonly found in packaged foods, in commercially fried food (e.g., French fries), in packaged snacks (e.g.,<br />

 microwaveable popcorn), and in hard stick margarine and vegetable shortening.</p>
<p>* Monounsaturated Fats</p>
<p>Monounsaturated fats are the good fats because they cause blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol to decrease, and at the same time, increase HDL cholesterol or the good cholesterol. Products that contain high levels of monounsaturated fats include olive oil, canola oil and nuts. Look for these ingredients in any healthy dinner recipe, like salad dressing made with olive oil.</p>
<p>* Polyunsaturated Fats</p>
<p>Similar to monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats help lower total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. High levels of polyunsaturated fats are found in safflower oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, fish oil, and seafood like salmon. The Omega-3 fatty acids fall under this type of fats.</p>
<p>Some Things You Can Do to Avoid the Bad Fats</p>
<p>* Use only cooking oils that have low amounts of saturated fats and high amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (e.g., olive oil, flax seed oil and canola oil).</p>
<p>* Stay away from commercially packaged foods since they have high trans fat content. </p>
<p>* Read food labels and go with those that are trans fat free. </p>
<p>* Avoid saturated fats by opting for low-fat versions of dairy products (e.g., skim milk).</p>
<p>* Go for lean meats. Make sure the visible fats and the skins are removed.</p>
<p>Following this advice will help make sure you benefit the most from a nutritious, healthy dinner recipe.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s what to eat:</p>
<p>1.	Lots of vegetables and fruits</p>
<p>2.	Increase healthy protein intake. This is how you build lean muscle tissue, which in turn speeds up your metabolism. Examples are fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, beans, and soy products.</p>
<p>3.	Fiber-Rich foods. They will fill up and they make they are satisfying. In this category are: peas, beans, bran cereals, potato skins, nuts and seeds, oatmeal, bulger wheat, 100% whole wheat baked goods, fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p>4.	Minerals. Calcium and other minerals are you &#8220;secret weapons&#8221; against body fat. They are found in low-fat dairy products, small or canned fish, soy tofu, green vegetables, nuts, seeds, bran cereals, and calcium fortified orange juice, and avoid processed, salt-loaded foods.</p>
<p>5.	Eat fish and beneficial fats. Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acid in some fish, oils and nuts is a good fat. Eat moderate amounts of salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and other oily fish. Soybeans, nuts, pumpkin seed are also excellent sources for Omega-3.</p>
<p>6.	Reduce harmful fats &#8211; saturated and trans fats. These are not only high in calories; they are also loaded with harmful fatty acids that cause disease.</p>
<p>7.	Always eat an adequate breakfast for several reasons: it will speed up your metabolism earlier in the day and when you skip breakfast, it makes it harder to control your appetite later in the day. </p>
<p>8.	Cut back or eliminate alcohol. It is high in non-filling calories. Ideal consumption is one glass of beer or wine a day.</p>
<p>9.	Stay away from junk carbohydrates &#8211; sugar and white flour are diet killers in all but the smallest amounts.</p>
<p>10.	Gradually reduce your calorie intake because extreme and sudden dieting causes your body to conserve, not burn calories, and it slows fat loss.</p>
<p>11.	Snack instead of eating large meals &#8211; larger, higher calorie meals tend to be stored as fat, instead of burned for energy. Ideally, you should eat five or six smaller, nutritious snacks each day instead of large meals.</p>
<p>12.	Move! You must exercise to build lean tissue that burns fat. As little as two to three hours per week of brisk walking at minimum, and you will notice a major impact on your weight loss.</p>
<p>13.	Reduce stress. It produces adverse fat-producing chemistry in your body. Try warm baths, meditation, deep breathing, stretching, massage, prayer and rest.</p>
<p>14.	Get outside into the sunshine at lest 20 minutes per day &#8211; the vitamin D you get from sunshine works with calcium for health and body fat control.</p>

<p>We often tend to think of fat as the big taboo when it comes to nutrition. The fact is however that, although we need to be weary of certain kinds, fats are essential building blocks for healthy brains. This can be seen in the fact that almost two thirds of the weight of the human brain is made up out of fat! The two main functions that fats perform in the brain are:IOur falsifying beliefs about fats keep us ignorant. We presume that fats are not fit for nutrition but the reality is different. No doubt some fats are not good for nutrition but not all are bad. We must know about good categories of fats which keep our brains healthy by developing blocks in them. Almost two thirds weight of human brains is due to fats. Two major roles which fats play in brain are as follows:IWhenever we talk of nutrition, we keep fats aside due to false presumptions. But the reality is totally different. Some specific fats are mandatory for a balanced and healthy brain. Certain categories of fats keep our brains balanced by building blocks in them. The findings are before us that fats make approximately two thirds of our brain&#8217;s weight. Let&#8217;s know two major roles which fats play for the effective functioning of our brains:</p>
<p>&#8226; Membrane formation: Systematic protection of human brain is done through the double layered membrane made up of fatty acids which surrounds neurons to protect it from external wastes. Membranes are pivotal in keeping the brain function effectively. They keep vigil of entry of micronutrients, glucose and oxygen in it which proves best for it. &#8226; Protection: Made up of 30% protein and 70% fat, the protective sheath named Myelin covers up neurons.</p>
<p>Above findings guide us how to keep our brains in good shape. It is revealed that we need several specific fatty acids to keep our brains functional. Although our bodies produce many fatty elements we need to procure some from our diet, which are often denoted as &#8216;Essential Fatty Acids&#8217;. Prominent amongst them are as follows: &#8226; Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA): It is an important component of &#8216;Omega 3 Fatty Acid&#8217;. Eating various types of fish, nuts, seeds and vegetables help you attain them. &#8226; Linolenic Acid (LA): It is crucial component of &#8216;Omege 6 Fatty Acid&#8217;. Sunflower, corn and sesame oils are its best sources.</p>
<p>Two highly effective fatty acids Docosahegagonic Acid (DHA) and Arachidonic Acid (AA) respectively are prepared through regular intake of ALA and LA. It is done to keep the brain function systematically. As above mentioned acids are more complex than ALA and LA, they are crucial for the brain to perform complex roles. Its most important role is formation of membrane. Although our bodies produce DHA but it can also be directly gained from various diets. We must remain careful in it and shouldn&#8217;t forget to use possible means to procure them as lack of this effective acid might bring untoward circumstances. Balanced diet is necessary for this as it acts like a supplement of DHA.</p>

<p>One of the reasons why the things mentioned above seem to be getting worse in our society has to do with the way in which fat is consumed in the modern diet. When natural fats are heated at extreme temperatures a process called &#8216;hydrogenation&#8217; occurs. This radically alters the structure of the fat molecules into a shape that is rarely found in nature. The &#8216;trans-fatty acids&#8217; created in this way are taken up into nerve cells but they do not &#8216;fit&#8217; as they should because they are not shaped like DHA. This means that the brain cells containing trans-fatty acids become more rigid. This has a severe negative effect on the communication between different neurons. A diet that is heavy on trans-fatty acids is therefore quite likely to lead to diminished brain performance.</p>
<p>How can you implement above mentioned guidelines in your diet? Prefer quality diet containing fatty acids like Omega 3, Omega 6 and &#8216;pure&#8217; DHA. Also remain strict in avoiding trans-fatty acids. In the meanwhile you should have keen interest in maintaining appropriate fat level in your body. Some effective &#8216;fat management&#8217; strategies are mentioned here:</p>
<p>&#8226; Avoid Hydrogenated Fats: Hydrogenation damages your health. Trans-fatty acids are mainly created due to this. Its process develops when oils or fats are heated at extreme temperatures. Complete avoidance of fried food items is good to control it. Don&#8217;t also take oils and margarines prepared by hydrogenation process.</p>
<p>&#8226; Make &#8216;Omegas&#8217; an essential part of your diet: Don&#8217;t forget to take both ALA and LA because they are &#8216;essential fatty acids&#8217;. Take them regularly. Cold water fishes like salmon, trout, mackerel and sardines are good choices. Likewise primrose and borage are best Omega 3 products like eggs and other diary items coming in the Omega 6 category.</p>
<p>&#8226; Supplement where necessary: Make it a habit to take regular supplements with enough ALA and LA. Choose perfect DHA if you don&#8217;t get enough quantity of it from regular diet.</p>
<p>&#8226; Manage body fat levels: As human brain is conglomeration of several blood vessels which supply energy, an extra amount of body fat once entered into them keep your brain at doldrums and force it to function improperly. For Thea Singer, stress isn&#8217;t an abstract concept. Three years ago, shortly before the manuscript for her book was due to her publisher, her elderly mother&#8217;s health deteriorated. Suffering from severe emphysema, she clung to life through a ventilator, as Singer coordinated her care. Around the same time, Singer&#8217;s daughter entered her pre-teens, and their usually serene relationship became challenging. &#8220;It was an incredibly, incredibly stressful time,&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>
Yet fortuitously for the Boston-based science writer, the book she was working round-the-clock to report and write aimed to mitigate these very types of stressors&mdash;along with larger issues Americans grapple with, from financial woes to terrorist threats. Specifically, Singer was exploring cutting-edge research into how stress ages us.</p>

This fall, the product of her work hit shelves. Over time, as cells reproduce, our telomeres become shorter and shorter, until they become so stubby that the process stops. As this happens, we see signs of aging.</p>

Over the past few decades, research into telomeres has become a &#8220;white-hot area of science,&#8221; says Singer. Last year, University of California-San Francisco cell biologist Elizabeth Blackburn (a major character in <i>Stress Less</i>) and two other scientists won the <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=11b7ctc44/*http://www.ucsf.edu/nobel/2009/blackburn/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine</a> for their groundbreaking work in discovering the enzyme that lengthens telomeres, called telomerase. And increasingly, researchers are discovering that telomeres serve as markers for our overall health.</p>
<p>
But it&#8217;s only now that the medical community is closing in on telomere testing for the average patient. &#8220;Sooner than you think,&#8221; says Singer, doctors will likely start ordering a simple blood test to determine the length of your telomeres at your yearly physical. The technology exists in research labs; it&#8217;s simply a matter of implementing it on a larger scale. In fact, in the next two weeks, Blackburn and renowned researcher Calvin Harley will be launching <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=10qdlao8e/*http://telomehealth.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Telome Health Inc.</a>, a private telomere testing service &#8220;to assess health status, disease, and mortality risk, and responses to specific therapies.&#8221;</p>

Thankfully, like cholesterol, we have the tools to control our telomeres, to preserve them, and even lengthen them once they&#8217;ve been worn down. It all comes down to stress&mdash;or, more accurately, how we perceive and cope with stress.</p>
<p><p>&ldquo;Sooner than you think&rdquo; doctors will likely start ordering a simple blood test to determine the length of your telomeres at your yearly physical. </p>

As Blackburn and other scientists have proven, chronic stress accelerates the aging process. It works like this: When we encounter a stressful situation, we enter our primitive &#8220;fight or flight&#8221; mode, in which our brain signals our bodies to release potent stress hormones that, if we were actually fighting or fleeing, would help us to perform our best. Yet for many of us today, because the stress doesn&#8217;t end once we spear the moose or escape to our cave, those hormones remain in our blood, wreaking havoc on our bodies. And as we work to fend off the damage, our cells reproduce more quickly.</p>
<p>
Not surprisingly, the supplement and pharmaceutical worlds are taking note: A New York-based company called <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=10spf0cnp/*http://www.tasciences.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">T.A. Sciences</a> recently released the first supplement to restore telomeres. Made from a Chinese root, TA-65 helps to activate telomerase, which rebuilds the strands. And a Reno, Nevada-based biomedical research company called <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=10rr9ve0d/*http://www.sierrasci.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sierra Sciences</a> is actively working to create a drug that founder and molecular biologist Bill Andrews says could be the mythical Fountain of Youth that mankind has long sought. &#8220;I think this will be the biggest thing that ever hit the planet,&#8221; he said.</p>

Singer remains more than skeptical of such cure-alls (and touches on them only obliquely in her book, asking: What&#8217;s the definition of a cell that lives forever, dividing indefinitely? A cancer cell. And cancer cells, despite their short telomeres, have &#8220;a hundred-fold more telomerase&#8221; than normal cells). At her recent book party for <i>Stress Less</i>, though her mother passed away last year and her daughter is now lurching toward teendom, Singer appears sprightly, fit, and relaxed. She offers simple, practical steps we can take that promise to not only improve overall health and well-being, but perhaps even turn back the clock. Here are 10 ways you can preserve or lengthen your telomeres.</p>
<p>
<b>1. Don&#8217;t Diet</b></p>
<p>
Not only is dieting psychologically stressful, it&#8217;s also biologically stressful&mdash;and it may be aging us. A <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=12mn0j040/*http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/cgi/content/full/70/8/845?ck=nck&#038;cookietest=yes" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">recent study</a> out of the University of California-San Francisco revealed that the more rigid the female participants&#8217; dieting attempts, the shorter their telomeres. On the flip side, studies also show that eating &#8220;mindfully,&#8221; and eating a healthy, balanced diet, can help to preserve our telomeres.</p>
<p>
<b> 2. Bust Belly Fat</b></p>
<p>
Turns out a tummy may be more than just an obstacle to skinny jeans: Abdominal fat speeds up cellular aging. As &#8220;our guts expand, our health deteriorates, our hair grays, and our skin sags off our bones,&#8221; writes Singer. Even more compelling: Our overall body obesity&mdash;or body mass index (or BMI)&mdash;doesn&#8217;t appear to have an impact on telomere length, according to another <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=12a036i02/*http://dgim.ucsf.edu/heartandsoulstudy/pdf/farzaneh-far.plosone.2010.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">remarkable study</a> out of University of California-San Francisco. It&#8217;s simply waist-hip ratio that matters.</p>

<b> 3. Eat Pistachio Nuts</b></p>
<p>
Pistachios may be small, but they are mighty when it comes to buffering the body&#8217;s response to life&#8217;s challenges. A <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=111e9o09m/*http://live.psu.edu/story/23883" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2007 Penn State study</a> revealed that eating the nuts regularly can reduce our vascular response to stress; they relax our blood vessels, causing blood pressure, LDL (the bad cholesterol), and triglycerides to drop. While scientists haven&#8217;t yet looked at the direct effect of pistachios on telomeres, by protecting our bodies against these physical stressors, it stands to reason that they also protect our DNA.</p>
<p><b> 4. Take Omega-3s</b></p>
<p>Among the growing list of the benefits of Omega-3s, we can now add something akin to a youth elixir. Not only do the fatty acids (found naturally in fish like salmon and sardines) protect our telomeres, but <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=11pqa8kdg/*http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/303/3/250" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">research suggests</a> they actually help them grow&mdash;essentially, reversing the aging process. &#8220;It&#8217;s very preliminary, but it&#8217;s exciting because it suggests there may be a way you can manipulate cellular aging with simple supplements,&#8221; Dr. Ramin Farzaneh-Far, the scientist at USCF who discovered this power, told Singer. Also exciting: In <a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/dailybeast/ts_dailybeast/storytext/10851_telomeresthelinkbetweenstressandaging/38424012/SIG=11dg1v1k1/*http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19279081" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">another study</a>, women who took multivitamins had longer telomeres than those who didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p><b>5. Find an Exercise You Enjoy and Do It Regularly</b></p>
<p>Newsflash: Working out doesn&#8217;t have to suck! And if you feel like it sucks, you may be doing your body more harm than good. When exercise feels like a dreaded chore, our bodies release stress hormones that counteract many of its positive effects. <p>For decades, research has shown that having a supportive social network translates to remarkable physical benefits, including lowered risk for various diseases. Yet new research suggests that spending time with loved ones may even slow aging itself, says Singer. &#8220;The degree to which having emotional support, the perception that this exists and the reality of its being there, basically means that your brain is bathed in lesser amounts of stress hormones,&#8221; Teresa Seeman, a stress researcher at UCLA told the author. And fewer stress hormones mean fewer stubby telomeres.</p>
<p><b> 9. Sleep</b></p>
<p>While scientists haven&#8217;t yet conducted research directly linking sleep to telomere length, existing sleep research suggests that the fewer Zs we get, the faster we&#8217;ll age. <p>MIAMI (Reuters) &ndash; Florida marine conservationists have come up with a simple recipe for fighting the invading lionfish that is gobbling up local reef life &#8212; eat them.</p>

The Key Largo-based REEF conservation organization has just released &#8220;The Lionfish Cookbook,&#8221; a collection of 45 recipes which is the group&#39;s latest strategy to counter an invasion of the non-native reddish brown-striped fish in Florida waters.</p>
<p>
&#8220;It&#39;s absolutely good eating &#8212; a delicacy. It&#39;s delicately flavored white meat, very buttery,&#8221; Lad Akins, director of special projects for Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), told Reuters. He authored the cookbook along with a professional chef, Tricia Ferguson.</p>
<p>
Red lionfish, a prickly predator armed with flaring venomous spines like a lion&#39;s mane that give them their name, are native to the South Pacific, Indian Ocean and Red Sea.</p>
<p>
With few natural predators, they have been rapidly expanding in Caribbean and Atlantic waters, voraciously preying on local fish, shrimp and crab populations across the region and in Florida, which has world-famous coral reefs.</p>
<p>
Some scientists are now listing the invasive lionfish species among the top 15 threats to global biodiversity.</p>
<p>
While REEF has organized local fishing &#8220;derbies&#8221; to hunt the lionfish, including handling tips and tasting sessions, Akins said making humans the invading species&#39; top predator was the best way to fight back against the threat it posed.</p>
<p>
&#8220;Fishermen and divers realize it&#39;s a danger to our native marine life, through its predation. But there really aren&#39;t government funds to provide bounties or removal programs. So creating a demand for the fish, a market for the fish, is in effect a de facto bounty,&#8221; he told Reuters.</p>
<p>
U.S. government researchers believe the red lionfish was introduced into Florida waters during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when an aquarium broke and at least six fish spilled into Miami&#39;s Biscayne Bay.</p>

&#8220;CARIBBEAN&#39;S NEW DELICACY&#8221;</p>
<p>
The front section of the cookbook, which calls the lionfish &#8220;The Caribbean&#39;s New Delicacy,&#8221; gives useful tips on collecting, handling and preparing the colorful species, as well as providing expert background on its ecological impact.</p>
<p>
Akins says the fish, which lives among coral, can be netted, speared or caught by rod and reel, but he recommends handling them with puncture-proof gloves to avoid a painful prick from the mantle of venomous spines.</p>
<p>
&#8220;They can be quick over a short distance, but they&#39;re not a free-swimming ocean fish like a tuna or a mackerel,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>
Unlike the toxic Fugu pufferfish or blowfish, which is an expensive delicacy in Japan but requires careful expert preparation to avoid potentially fatal poisoning, Akins says lionfish meat is safe to eat and contains no venom.</p>
<p>
&#8220;The venom is only in the spines. Cooking the fish would denature the venom, even if you left the spines on. It&#39;s simple enough just to cut the spines off,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>
Akins said he hoped the cookbook could help create a commercial market for lionfish that would speed their eradication. But he wasn&#39;t sure whether the brightly colored invader would appear on the menus of Miami Beach eateries.</p>
<p>
&#8220;It certainly is on the menu in many other countries &#8212; the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Mexico,&#8221; he said, adding that orders for the recipe book, which can be purchased online at www.reef.org, were coming in fast.</p>

<p>I have noticed that by using the video and mixing it in with running that I am actually starting to feel stronger. I didn&#8217;t lose any weight this week. In fact, I gained almost a pound. Instead of fretting over the number on the scale, it is finally sinking in that my weight really does fluctuate. The numbers on the scale are seriously just one way to track my progress. Some weeks the scale and I agree,<span id="more-62"></span> and other weeks &#8212; like this one &#8212; we have a little difference in opinion.</p>
